PLEASE READ ALL THE INFORMATION 

There are two parts to the Contest Notification and Registration requirement; each part must be completed as stated below:

ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED UPON ARRIVAL

All Contests will be held at the regular monthly Assembly #112 meetings as scheduled.
All Contests are open to the public
for their viewing pleasure and Magical enjoyment.

All Competitors must notify the President or Contest Moderator of their intent to compete in the contest and must submit a completed application prior to the contest.*

1*All Contestants must contact the President or Contest Moderator prior to the Contest date in order to be guaranteed a position in the contest. CONTESTANTS MUST COMPLETE AND SIGN AN APPLICATION ACKNOWLEDGING THAT YOU HAVE READ THE RULES.

2.  *All Applications must be submitted in writing to the President or Contest Moderator within thirty (30) minutes prior to the Contest start time or contestants can not compete for special recognition or Trophy.

In all cases the Decisions of the Judges, President and Board are FINAL!

Close-up Contest

All performers wishing to enter the contest must read and comply with the Rules and Regulations.  The winner of the Close-up Contest may be eligible to receive a Wizard Trophy at the Annual Installation Dinner, provided the winner attained the requisite score.  Assembly members and the public are invited and encouraged to attend this annual event. 

 
Stage Contest

Enjoy an evening of entertaining magic, performed by members of  Assembly No. 112.  All performers wishing to enter the contest must read and comply with the Rules and Regulations.  The winner of the Stage Contest may be eligible to receive a Wizard Trophy at the Annual Installation Dinner, provided the winner attained the requisite score.  The winner of the Professional Class Stage competition will receive a $100 cash prize at the Annual Installation Dinner, and can represent Assembly No. 112 at the Oakland Magic Circle's Annual Interclub Competition and Spaghetti Feed.  Assembly members and the public are invited and encouraged to attend this annual event.turn

Table Hopping Contest

Close-up Contest - Rules and Regulations
Important:
There will be no fire, fog machines or "Blue Magic (foul language) allowed at the performance.
In all cases the Decisions of the Judges, President and Board are FINAL! 

*Forms Deadline: You must notify the President or Contest Moderator that you intend to compete in the contest.  Application forms must be submitted to the President or Contest Moderator within 30 minutes prior to the contest start time or you can not compete for the Wizard’s Trophy.   Special circumstance will be considered, and the Board and the President have the FINAL determination. 

  1. Purpose: The purpose of this contest is to have fun performing in the contest environment.  That environment is not necessarily the "real world," but rather an environment in which the rules of Performance Etiquette are applied.  Performance of "Blue Magic" (foul language) is reason for immediate disqualification.

  2. Who Can Enter: Any member of the Society of American Magicians, Assembly #112 is eligible to enter the contest.  The applicant must be in good standing with both the National Society and local Assembly at the time the application is submitted.  An applicant must have been approved as a member by National, prior to the applicant being eligible to enter a contest.

  3. Close-up Defined: Close-up is defined as a series of effects that complete one routine.  However, the routine may consist of a single effect.  Close-up means bringing the audience into the magician's environment and creating an intimate focus of interest between the magician and volunteers.  The Magician will either (a) be seated at a table, or (b) stands behind the table, and perform for the volunteers who are seated at the table.  It is that interest and excitement created in the volunteers that are projected to the audience.

  4. Maximum Performance Time: The maximum time period for your performance is SEVEN (7) minutes.  This time period begins with your acknowledgment to the timekeeper that you are about to begin and ends when you are through, for example, thanking the volunteers and/or a final bow.  All audience participation prior to the ending (i.e., laughing, clapping during act, difficulty with a volunteer, etc.) will be counted as part of your overall time allotment.  You will be informed by the timekeeper at the four minute mark, or other time period agreed upon by all performers.  Exception - If music is used at the beginning and/or end of your routine, the time during which the music is played will count in your time allotment.

  5. Amateur Class Scoring Criteria: Amateur Class entrants will be judged on the basis of  Appearance, Presentation, Entertainment Value, and Overall Score.

  6. Professional Class Scoring Criteria: Professional Class entrants will be judged on the basis of Appearance, Presentation, Technical Skill, Originality/Uniqueness, and Entertainment Value.

  7. A Single Class May Be Entered: The Contestant may enter either the Professional or Amateur Class Contest, not both.  The Contest Committee reserves the right to exclude an applicant from entering the Amateur Class Contest.  Any applicant so excluded will be eligible to perform in the Professional Class Contest.

  8. Wizard Trophy: The winner of the Professional Class Close-up Contest may be eligible to receive the Wizard Trophy, provided the requisite number of points (i.e., 80% of total available) is scored and all rules and regulations governing the Contest are adhered to.

  9. Equipment Required: Although you are asked to state on the form the "equipment needed," it is your responsibility to assure such equipment is available.

  SELECTION OF JUDGES: Judges will be selected from active members in good standing, or those in attendance at the contest who wishes to judge their
       peers, or any judge that the President and contest moderator may choose.  Each judge will and must be impartial and without prejudice. 

  Availability of Judges: At your option, the judges will be available after the    performance to discuss the scoring of your performance. 

You are further asked to describe your act or routine on the Application.  This portion must be completed FOR THE ASSEMBLY TO HAVE A RECORD OF YOUR ROUTINE.  IF YOU WIN THE CONTEST- YOU CAN NOT USE THE SAME ROUTINE TO ENTER THE SAME CONTEST FOR THREE YEARS.  YOU MAY ENTER THE CONTEST BUT YOU CAN NOT COMPETE TO WIN THE TROPHY.
YOU MAY NOT AS A WINNER ENTER THE SAME CONTEST YEAR AFTER YEAR OR BACK TO BACK. 
YOU ARE LIMITED TO ONE WIN PER EACH CONTEST EVERY TWO YEARS

Be assured, that both the description of your act and your name as a performer will be held in strictest confidence.  Under no circumstance will the description of your act be released.  Your name will be released on the evening of the performance.



Stage Contest - Rules and Regulations

3Stage Defined: Stage means a routine Stage performance in an environment separated from the audience which might incorporate, in addition to the magic effects, music,         pantomime, speaking, audience participation, etc.  The magician may use rabbits, dove and other small animals.  The performer must project interest and excitement to the    
      audience directly, or through the use of volunteers.  The Magician may perform on an actual stage.  The Magician may perform with an assistant.  Although a microphone       may be made available, you are encouraged to bring your own microphone set-up, if  you choose to use one.  If you use music with your act, such music is to be on a         
      tape or  DVD, properly queued and properly marked with instructions as to how it is to be played.  If your music is downloaded to a mini disc, bring your own equipment
     to interface with the system used.  You may also bring your own sound engineer.    
4Maximum Performance Time: The maximum time period for your performance is TEN (10) minutes.  This time period begins with your acknowledgment to the                      timekeeper that you are about to begin and ends when you are through, for example, thanking the volunteers and/or a final bow.  All audience participation prior to the         ending (i.e., laughing, clapping during act, difficulty with a volunteer, etc.) will be counted as part of your overall time allotment. You will be informed by the timekeeper       at the nine minute mark, or other time period agreed upon by all performers.  Exception- If music is used at the beginning and/or end of your routine, the time during which   
      the  music is played will count in your time allotment.                                                         
5.  Amateur Class Scoring Criteria: Amateur Class entrants will be judged on the basis of Appearance, Presentation, Entertainment Value, and Overall Score.

Professional Class Scoring Criteria: Professional Class entrants will be judged on the basis of Appearance, Presentation, Technical Skill, Originality/Uniqueness, and          Entertainment Value.

      points (i.e., 80% of total available) are scored and all rules and regulations governing the Contest are adhered to.  The winner of the Professional Class Stage competition
      will receive a $100 cash prize at the Assembly #112 Annual Installation Dinner, and can represent Assembly #112 at Oakland Magic Circle's Annual Interclub Competition
      and Spaghetti Feed.

Equipment Required: Although you are asked to state on the form the "equipment needed," it is your responsibility to assure such equipment is available.  Assembly #112      will provide a spotlight and a sound system upon request.  The magician assumes full responsibility that all equipment brought to the performance is in working order and         compatible with existing equipment.                                                                        

 SELECTION OF JUDGES: Judges will be selected from active members in good standing, or those in attendance at the contest who wishes to judge their   
      peers, or any judge that the President and contest moderator may choose.  Each judge will and must be impartial and without prejudice.
 

 Availability of Judges: At your option, the judges will be available after the performance to discuss the scoring of your performance.

Table Hopping Contest - Rules and Regulations

Table Hopping Defined: Table Hopping means the performance of a routine (a) in the hands of the volunteers, (b) on the table at which the volunteers are seated, (c) while standing before the seated volunteers, or (d) any combination thereof.  The table will be set as though in a restaurant environment.  Moving any part of a place setting is not permitted.  If a pad is used, all edges of the pad must be on the table (i.e., the edge of the pad may not hang over the edge of the table).  The magician will be expected to perform in the environment set up for the contest.
  4. Repeat Performances: The magician will perform the identical routine (note - failure to perform the identical routine is reason for disqualification) on multiple occasions during the contest.  Typically, the magician will repeat the performance three (3) or more times depending on the number of performers and tables used.  The magician will move from table to table performing for a different audience each time.
  5. Maximum Performance Time: The maximum time period for your performance is SEVEN (7) minutes.  This time period begins with your acknowledgment to the timekeeper and/or the volunteers that you are about to begin and ends when you are through, for example, thanking the volunteers and/or a final bow.  All volunteer participation prior to the ending (i.e., laughing, difficulty with a volunteer, etc.) will be counted as part of your overall time allotment.  You will be informed by the timekeeper at the four minute mark, or other time period agreed upon by all performers.    
  6. Maximum Reload Time: The maximum reload time is three (3) minutes.  An area will be set aside in which you will be able to reload your effects for your next performance, if necessary.  Please note that unused performance time will NOT extend the reload time.
  7. Amateur Class Scoring Criteria: Amateur Class entrants will be judged on the basis of  Appearance, Presentation, Entertainment Value, and Overall Score.
  8. Professional Class Scoring Criteria: Professional Class entrants will be judged on the     basis of Appearance, Presentation, Technical Skill, Originality/Uniqueness, and Entertainment Value.
